Whytrig Middle School Celebrates a Seamless Transition from Primary School to Middle School

Students in Northumberland are settling into the new academic year as they move through Seaton Valley Federation’s tiered school system. The Federation is paying special attention to those transitioning through from one school to another to ensure their students feel comfortable and supported.

Great start to the School Year

Seaton Valley Federation are proud of their three tier system with middle schools (Seaton Sluice Middle School and Whytrig Middle School) and our high school (Astley Community High School).  The Federation welcomes children in Year 5 from their local feeder first schools and in Year 9 when they transition from middle to high school.

Some children join their middle schools in Year 7 from primary school, taking advantage of the supportive environment they provide. However, they also accept admissions in all year groups at any time during the school year, when places are available. This flexibility allows for students to join at different times whilst still ensuring they receive the support and care they require during the transitional period.

School as a Community

Whytrig Middle School, located in Seaton Delaval, was delighted to have welcomed nine children this September from primary schools across the North East and as far away as Oxford!  They expressed pride that all children have settled in extremely well and are embracing everything the school has to offer from intuitive, challenging and enjoyable lessons, to after school clubs and activities.

The efforts of the school were reflected in their most recent Ofsted report (November 2021) which stated:

“Pupils who join the school during the year settle extremely quickly. They thrive in this nurturing environment”

Families have informed the school that their children are enjoying their start at Whytrig and how quickly they have made friends and felt part of the school community. One child thanked their parents for choosing Whytrig Middle School for them and expressed how much they are enjoying the variety of subjects and activities on offer.

Head of School, Mr Jon Souter commented on how quickly all pupils have settled into school and that pupils are welcomed into all year groups at any time during the academic year.
