North East has highest number of Local authority maintained primaries in deficit

The North East has England’s highest number of local authority (LA) maintained primary schools running a deficit, new research from the Education Policy Institute shows.

The proportion of North East LA maintained primary schools in deficit rose sharply from 4.6% in 2010-11 to 10.1% in 2016-17. Across England the proportion changed from 5.2% in 2010-11 to 7.1% in 2016-17.

Across England the number of LA maintained state secondary schools falling into deficit has almost trebled in the last four years to more than a quarter. In the North East the rise has been more dramatic, climbing from 7% in 2013/14 to 26.7% in 2016-17, the third highest in England behind London and Yorkshire and Humber.

The figures do not cover other schools such as academies.
