Ad Astra Academy Trust: Navigating Educational Excellence and Sustainability

The latest episode of The Schools North East Podcast features an insightful conversation with Andy Brown, CEO of Ad Astra Academy Trust.

With 47 years of experience, Andy offers a unique perspective on leading educational transformation and nurturing growth within diverse communities. Listen to the full episode here.

A foundation of success

Ad Astra Academy Trust is a beacon of success, operating 10 primary schools across four local authorities. From schools serving areas with 80% free school meals to those in affluent neighbourhoods, the Trust proudly boasts 100% “Good” Ofsted ratings.

This success isn’t by chance; it’s the result of a steadfast commitment to their “Ad Astra” (to the stars) philosophy, focusing on maximising every child’s potential. They champion an equitable approach, fostering a “we are one” culture where every school contributes and benefits from the collective strength.

Facing financial headwinds

However, even with impressive achievements, challenges loom. Financial sustainability is a growing concern as reserves, currently at £1.6 million, are diminishing due to unfunded pay increases and National Insurance contributions. This has led to a spending freeze and crucial conversations about intelligent growth and resource allocation.

Advocating for policy change

Andy also shares his compelling vision for education policy reform, advocating for a significant reduction in Ofsted’s capacity. He believes the substantial funds currently spent on inspections could be far better utilised by redirecting them directly to children and schools.

Additionally, he highlights the critical need for consistent SEND funding across all local authorities, stressing that delays in support can significantly impact a child’s precious primary education.

Nurturing leadership and future growth

The Trust’s commitment to internal talent development is another key to its success, with 50% of current heads having grown within the organisation.

Looking ahead, Ad Astra Academy Trust is launching a SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) program in September 2025, welcoming 10 Teach First participants. Andy is also actively planning his succession, seeking an evolutionary leader who shares the Trust’s child-focused, inclusive, and rigorous values.
