Wyvern Academy secures dazzling £70k grant to transform student learning

Wyvern Academy in Darlington, part of Consilium Academies, is celebrating a game-changing moment after securing a £70,000 grant from the prestigious Wolfson Foundation. This incredible boost will revolutionise learning opportunities for students, upgrading technology and improving classroom conditions.

A step towards the future

The Wolfson Foundation, an independent charity dedicated to advancing research and education, is known for investing in projects that make a real difference in science, health, heritage, humanities, and the arts.

Schools North East have previously partnered with The Wolfson Foundation to amplify these funding opportunities and expand their reach.

Wyvern Academy’s successful bid for funding came after a rigorous application process, proving its commitment to providing students with cutting-edge resources.

Now, thanks to this substantial grant, students will have access to state-of-the-art technology and more comfortable learning spaces. Among the exciting upgrades are:

  • 30 virtual reality headsets – enabling immersive learning experiences across subjects
  • 30 iPads – enhancing interactive learning and digital literacy
  • 30 personal computers – providing industry-standard tech for students
  • Interactive classroom displays – fostering engaging and dynamic lessons
  • Laser cutters for the Design and Technology Department – boosting creativity and innovation
  • Speakers and amplifiers for the Music Department – improving sound quality for performances and practice
  • Exam reader pens – supporting students who need additional learning assistance
  • Lego robotic kits – introducing students to robotics and coding in an exciting way
  • Air conditioning throughout classrooms – ensuring a comfortable environment for learning year-round

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “This incredible investment in Wyvern Academy is not just a win for the school, but for the wider North East community.

“By equipping our region’s students with cutting-edge technology and industry-standard resources, we are opening doors to limitless opportunities, inspiring the next generation of innovators, engineers, and creatives.”

Inspiring the next generation

With around 70% of Wyvern students opting for practical career routes after leaving school, the academy is committed to preparing them for the modern workforce. These new resources will give students hands-on experience with the latest technology, equipping them with valuable skills for apprenticeships and beyond.

Teachers hope the investment will spark even greater interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) subjects, encouraging more students to explore career paths in these high-demand fields. Additionally, the school aims to boost participation in GCSE Computer Science and Vocational ICT, ensuring students have the qualifications needed for the digital age.

Head of Department and Lead Teacher of Vocational Learning at Wyvern Academy, Dan Marshall, who applied for the funding, said: “I would like to thank The Wolfson Foundation for choosing to award us £70k in this funding round.

“The opportunities that this will give our students are limitless, from virtual field trips to digital animation and brand new high-spec classroom computers. We are overjoyed to have received this funding, which will go a long way in supporting our students’ learning and development.”

CEO of Consilium Academies, Michael McCarthy, said: “This funding will enhance Wyvern Academy’s resources and provide valuable opportunities for our students and we are very grateful to the Wolfson Foundation.

“Congratulations to Dan and the team for all their time and effort in applying for this grant money and we look forward to seeing the impact it will have on our young people.”

With this exciting new chapter, Wyvern Academy is set to inspire, innovate, and empower the next generation. The future looks bright for its students – and this is just the beginning!
