Three in four schools rated Outstanding have been downgraded after Ofsted inspectors returned, it was revealed yesterday.
In 2011, the Government announced that once a school had been rated Outstanding it was exempt from further inspections unless serious concerns were raised, but Ofsted wants this to be changed.
More than 1,600 schools have not been inspected for at least six years, and for more than 200 schools it has been more than a decade.
Amanda Spielman, Ofsted’s Chief Inspector, told MPs on the public accounts committee that three quarters of the schools inspected under the programme lost their Outstanding rating and a third dropped by two grades to Requires Improvement.
