The North East shines within the TES School Awards shortlist

The TES School Awards, a prestigious annual event celebrating the remarkable achievements of schools and staff across the UK, has once again highlighted the excellence within the North East education sector — and we aren’t surprised in the slightest.

With 23 categories, the awards recognise outstanding efforts in both state and independent schools throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The 2025 awards, culminating in a grand announcement of winners on Friday 20 June, sees several North East institutions and individuals deservedly shortlisted. Let’s explore them here.

Another reason to be proud of our region

The shortlisted schools and individuals represent the dedication, innovation, and passion that we already know exists in North East education, but it’s always a pleasure to see it recognised on a national stage.

This achievement not only celebrates individual institutions but also shines a spotlight on the strength and quality of education right across the entire region, regardless of shortlisted status.

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “It’s always brilliant to see the North East’s schools and educators recognised on a national platform — but never a surprise.

“These nominations are a testament to the hard work, innovation, and unwavering commitment happening in classrooms and leadership teams across our region every day.

“The TES School Awards shine a well-deserved spotlight on what we’ve known for a long time: the North East is a powerhouse of educational excellence.”

A closer look at individual triumphs

Let’s delve into the specific stories that have earned these North East schools and individuals their well-deserved place on the shortlist:

Cragside Primary School (Newcastle) has been shortlisted for Excellence in Creative Arts. This nomination recognises the school’s commitment to fostering creativity and artistic expression among its pupils, nurturing their talents and enriching their overall educational experience.

Royal Grammar School (Newcastle upon Tyne) has received not one, but two nominations! Firstly, James Miller is a contender for Head Teacher of the Year (Independent), acknowledging his exceptional leadership and impact on the school community.

Secondly, the school itself is shortlisted for Independent Senior School of the Year, a recognition of its consistently high standards and outstanding provision.

Ashbrooke School (Sunderland) is a finalist for Specialist Provision School of the Year. This nomination highlights the school’s dedication to providing exceptional support and education for students with specific needs, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Durham High School (County Durham) sees Rebecca Turner recognised as a finalist for Subject Lead of the Year (Secondary). This nomination celebrates her outstanding leadership and expertise in her subject area, and the positive impact she has had on her students and colleagues.

North East Learning Trust (County Durham) is shortlisted for Trust Team of the Year (10 or more schools). This nomination acknowledges the collaborative efforts and strategic leadership of the trust in driving improvement and ensuring high-quality education across its network of schools.

A beacon of excellence for the North East

These nominations are more than just individual accolades; they represent a collective achievement for the North East, and one we should be proud to shout about.

The recognition at the TES School Awards serves as an inspiration for other schools and educators across the region, encouraging them to continue to strive for the excellence we know their hard work is capable of producing.
