A world in one school: Carmel College’s Culture Festival brings community together

Carmel College came alive last month as students and staff gathered for the annual Culture Festival — a colourful, joyful celebration of the diverse cultures that make up the Carmel community.

A flavour-filled tour of the world in a single day

The event transformed the school hall into a global showcase, rich with food, colour, music, dance, and conversation. Students representing a huge number of countries including Azerbaijan, Poland, Nigeria, Myanmar, Fiji and regions of the Middle East, proudly shared elements of their heritage.

Students from every year group moved from table to table sampling traditional dishes, discovering unique customs, and asking thoughtful questions.

The spread of food was particularly impressive – from spicy chilli dishes to delicate baklava, to crisp spring rolls – creating a flavour-filled tour of the world in a single day.

A show-stopping dance performance

The highlight of the day was an electrifying student‑choreographed dance performance. The routine brought together Afrobeat themes, vibrant Bollywood-style Indian dance, and traditional Fijian Meke.

The fusion of these styles showcased not only the students’ immense talent but also the beauty and creativity that emerge when cultures connect. It was a performance that had the whole hall cheering and will surely be remembered for years to come.

A celebration of community

The day embodied everything Carmel stands for: inclusivity, respect, curiosity, and pride in one another. It offered students the chance not only to celebrate their own cultures but to explore and appreciate the backgrounds of others – building understanding and strengthening the community.

What an incredible day of celebration, connection, and culture. We already can’t wait for next year’s festival!
