Sunderland Pupil’s generosity shines at Harvest Festival

When nine-year-old Daley Boyes from St John Bosco Catholic Primary School in Sunderland set out for a shopping trip to Asda, it wasn’t toys or treats he had in mind. Instead, Daley filled his trolley with essentials for families in need, all to support St Aidan’s Catholic Academy Food Bank as part of his school’s annual Harvest Festival.

Brilliant work, Daley!

A heartfelt act of kindness that rippled through the community

Wanting to go above and beyond his school’s request for food donations, Daley raised money with the help of his parents, Hayley Dove and Danny Boyes, and their business clients. Not stopping there, he even contributed from his own pocket money in a fantastic display of selflessness.

With the funds, he stocked up on much-needed items to help local families who rely on the food bank’s support.

Daley explained his motivation, saying: “I wanted to help others less fortunate and do a good deed for the community. My Mam and Dad helped me raise some money and the rest I contributed from my pocket money.

“In our school we are working towards gaining the Live Simply Award, and I thought this was the perfect way to show solidarity, generosity and kindness to others. I’d encourage all my friends to try and donate too if they can.”

Shining example of kindness and community spirit

Philip Roddy, Acting Head of School, shared his pride in Daley’s actions: “We are all incredibly proud of Daley for his outstanding generosity and compassion during our Harvest Festival. His selfless contributions will make a real difference to families in need, and he has set a shining example of kindness and community spirit for us all. It’s inspiring to see such empathy and leadership in one of our pupils.”

An inspiration the entire region should look to

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, praised Daley’s inspiring contribution, saying: “Daley’s actions truly capture the spirit of our North East schools — caring, community-minded, and committed to making a difference. His kindness reminds us that leadership and compassion start early, and we’re incredibly proud to celebrate him.”

Daley’s generosity is a wonderful reminder of how small acts can have a big impact. Through kindness, initiative and empathy, he’s helping to build a stronger, more compassionate community, and showing that the North East’s future is full of heart.
