Stockton Primary recognised among the ‘Best of the Best’

St. Bede’s Catholic Academy, part of Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust, is being celebrated as one of the UK Government’s “best of the best” after receiving national recognition for its outstanding work on pupil behaviour and attendance.

What a fantastic way to end the year!

Leading a national programme from the North East

The designation places St. Bede’s among a highly selective group of just 57 schools nationwide recognised by the Government for their strong track record in improving attendance and behaviour standards.

Based on Green Lane in the Newtown area of Stockton, the school will now play a leading role in the DfE’s national campaign — sharing best practice, supporting other schools, and helping raise standards across the region and beyond.

High expectations, strong community impact

Head Teacher Bernadette Rizzi-Allan said the recognition reflects the school’s unwavering commitment to its pupils and community, stating: “St. Bede’s is a remarkable beacon in the local community, committed to giving our children the very best start in life. We have high ambitions for every child to achieve academically and personally, to belong to a strong school community, and to thrive and flourish, regardless of background.”

She added: “This accolade is a tribute to our dedicated and hardworking staff, our supportive parents, and our wonderful children. We believe that high expectations for attendance and good behaviour are essential in promoting life chances. Education is the key to raising aspirations — and we cannot educate those we cannot see.”

A proud Moment for schools in the North East

Schools North East Director Chris Zarraga welcomed the announcement, saying: “This is a fantastic recognition for St. Bede’s and for the wider North East education community.

“Being named as a behaviour and attendance hub shows how schools in our region are leading the way nationally, combining high expectations with strong community values to deliver real impact for children.”

Sharing success to inspire others

Mrs Rizzi-Allan said the school was proud to support others through the programme: “St. Bede’s is thrilled to have been chosen by the Department for Education to help lead the way, supporting and inspiring other schools across the country.”

The achievement was also welcomed by Stuart McGhee, Chief Executive of Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust, who said: “It is fantastic to see St. Bede’s recognised as one of only a handful of schools nationwide to lead this important initiative. Across our trust, we are deeply committed to excellent attendance and behaviour, and St. Bede’s is setting an outstanding example for others to follow.”

Excellence rooted in community

St. Bede’s Catholic Academy currently educates more than 220 pupils aged 3–11, and its recognition as a national hub underscores the powerful impact that strong leadership, clear expectations and community partnership can have on children’s outcomes — right here in the North East.

Well done, St. Bede’s. We can’t wait to see what’s next!
