Staff at Cardinal Hume Catholic School ‘extremely’ proud of GCSE pupils

The staff of Cardinal Hume Catholic School expressed how extremely proud they are of the achievement class of 2023. Like students across the country, they have faced unprecedented levels of challenge due to the pandemic, gaps in their education, removal of advance information and the return to the 2019 grading standard.

Despite this, the students have produced exceptional results. They have broadly matched the attainment of the year groups awarded teacher assessed grades in 2020 and 2021 and improved significantly on the results achieved in the years before the pandemic.

The region was acutely impacted by Covid and, against the much-publicised backdrop of lower levels of achievement in the North East, the school are delighted that their students have bucked the trend and are able to progress to the next stage of their studies, apprenticeships or employment, equipped with some excellent qualifications.

High quality qualifications open doors for young people and it is excellent to see such high numbers of students achieving the English Baccalaureate, getting the top grades in English and Mathematics and so many achieving grades 8 and 9 across the board.

Head Teacher, Brendan Robson said:

“We are extremely proud of the achievements of Cardinal Hume Catholic School’s class of 2023. Like students across the country, they have faced the challenges of pandemic, gaps in their education and the return to the 2019 grading standard. However, they have achieved exceptional results. They have broadly matched the attainment of the year groups awarded teacher assessed grades in 2020 and 2021 and improved significantly on the results achieved in the years before the pandemic. This group of young people displayed maturity, dedication and resilience in their time at Cardinal Hume and have been justly rewarded today. I wish all of them every success in their future endeavours.”

“Our region was acutely impacted by Covid and, against the much-publicised backdrop of lower levels of achievement in the North East, we are delighted that the students have bucked the trend and received some stunning results.”

“There has been much written in recent weeks about the underperformance of boys and disadvantaged students, with gaps widening rapidly. We are pleased to see our boys closely matching girls this year and the positive progress of students from some of the most disadvantaged backgrounds.”

“High quality qualifications open doors for young people and it is excellent to see such high numbers of students achieving the English Baccalaureate, getting the top grades in English and Mathematics and so many achieving grades 8 and 9 across the board.”
