St Anthony’s Girls’ Academy revs up for success in national STEM competition!

Huge congratulations are in order for a brilliant group of Year 9 students from St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy in Sunderland!

These talented young women have secured an impressive third place in a prestigious national livery design competition, earning them an exciting opportunity to compete in STEM on Track in the upcoming academic year.

A standout entry among hundreds of schools

The challenge tasked students with creating a motorsport livery design that beautifully reflected their school, their local community, and the dynamic motorsport industry. Their entry truly stood out among hundreds of schools across the UK, showcasing both remarkable artistic flair and a deep understanding of their communities.

The final results were unveiled during an exciting event held on Saturday 14 June at Whilton Mill Circuit in Northampton, where their winning design was proudly showcased.

The students from St Anthony’s, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, were absolutely thrilled to see their hard work recognised on such a prominent national platform. Now, they’re enthusiastically preparing to take their STEM journey to the next level!

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, commented on the achievement: “It’s fantastic to see our North East students excelling in national STEM competitions like this. Their creativity and dedication not only highlight the talent within our region but also inspire future generations to engage with crucial STEM subjects in exciting and innovative ways.”

Support needed to achieve their ambitious goal

Their participation in STEM on Track is a fantastic next step. This nationwide initiative uses the excitement of motorsport to inspire young people in science, technology, engineering, and maths by challenging them to build a go-kart from scratch and then race it.

While this incredible opportunity comes with a cost, the team has already secured £1,250 towards the £6,100 needed to take part next year. They are now actively seeking additional sponsors and supporters to help them achieve their ambitious goal.

Laura Dudley, Assistant Head Teacher at St Anthony’s, shared her pride: “This has been an incredible experience for our students. Their dedication, creativity and teamwork have been outstanding, and we’re so proud of them all.

“With the right support, they can go even further and share their passion of motorsports and love of STEM by building and racing their own go-kart in the finals next June.”

One of the Year 9 team members, Hannah, added: “Designing something that represents our school and seeing it come to life would be amazing! We’ve learned so much, and now we want to keep pushing forward in the competition.”

St Anthony’s Girls’ Academy is warmly inviting local businesses, community groups, and individuals to consider sponsoring this inspiring team. Sponsors will not only provide crucial support for the students’ continued involvement in STEM but will also gain valuable visibility through branding opportunities on the team’s livery and promotional materials.
