Schools delegation meets MP

Fourteen Head Teachers from across Northumberland were able to convey key educational issues to a prominent North East politician this week.

SCHOOLS NorthEast organised a Power Lunch with Anne-Marie Trevelyan, MP for Berwick upon Tweed, as part of its Partner Schools programme which gave a platform for school leaders to discuss current topics impacting on their schools.

The topics debated including ongoing issues of teacher recruitment and retention (with one school reporting taking more than a year to recruit a maths teacher); access to new technologies and services; broadband problems; issues with IT curriculum; isolation; and, the potential damage of switching from three tier system to a two tier one in parts of the county.

Anne-Marie is lobbying the Government to include plans for a fairer funding formula in its forthcoming Spending Review. She is also passionate about supporting education in rural communities, particularly transport provision required to enable pupils and students to access schools and colleges.

The event was sponsored by Accenture. Bob Paton, Managing Director of Accenture’s Newcastle Delivery Centre, spoke of the need for the Government to recognise that more should be done to match skills and education to the economy.
