Return of the Grammar School?: Green Paper Consultation Workshop

dfe-logoThe Government’s Schools that Work for Everyone Green Paper contains a series of proposals that would significantly reshape the education landscape in the North East.

The Government says the purpose of the proposals is “to create an education system that extends opportunity to everyone, not just the privileged few”, by expanding “radically the number of good school places available to all families”.

The plan to lift the ban on grammar schools has attracted most attention, but proposed changes to the role of faith schools, independent schools and universities in state education will also have major implications.

These proposals include removing the “50% cap” on faith-based admissions to oversubscribed faith schools, universities establishing or sponsoring schools in the state system as a condition of charging higher fees, and independent schools providing direct support to their state counterparts.

We need your help to shape a North East response to these proposals. SCHOOLS NorthEast is holding a consultation workshop for all school leaders on Wednesday, November 16 to inform our response to the Green Paper.

The consultation closes on December 12.

The event will include:

  • An overview of the Green Paper proposals.
  • Presentations from representatives of faith schools, selective schools, independent schools and universities on the role they see themselves playing within state education.
  • Workshop sessions to discuss the proposals and how SCHOOLS NorthEast should respond.

The event will take place from 12-4pm on Wednesday 16 November at the Quality Hotel Boldon, Boldon Business Park, Witney Way, Boldon, NE35 9PE. There will be no charge for this event and a light lunch will be provided.

If you would like to attend this event, please email info@schoolsnortheast.com.
