Pupils Champion Diversity at South Hylton Primary Academy

Pupils at South Hylton held their very own Pride Day to celebrate diversity, difference and promote understanding.

This was the second Pride Day the school has held and happened at the request of pupils at the school. Students  were enthusiastic to repeat last year’s event and, inspired by the LGBTQ+ Pride events held around the region, they asked Head of School Christopher Mitchinson to hold the school-wide event.

Mr Mitchinson explained, ‘It’s wonderful to see our pupil’s taking the lead on something that is obviously so important to them and it is even more wonderful to see the community of South Hylton supporting them. We encourage everyone to simply be the best version of who they are.’

The day included raising awareness of all pupils and families to: accept difference; understand the importance of equality and respect and understand how to challenge LGBTQ+ stereotypes.

The whole-school dressed in rainbow colours and shared stories, which challenged a range of stereotypes, encouraging children to ask questions and debate ideas.  Miss Patterson, the school’s Personal Development Lead, worked alongside pupils to create a day where everyone was represented and celebrated. ‘What has been most satisfying is that the children’s own words show how, as young people, they are flying the rainbow flag for greater understanding and respect.’

‘We want to make sure people are fairly represented, challenge stereotypes and help people if they feel scared about joining the LGBTQ+ community. We want all children to grow up to be able to educate others.’ Freya and Rosie- Year 5 pupils.

‘Pride day helps us show that it is fine to be different.’ Poppy- Year 2.
