Pupils at Newcastle High School for Girls celebrate outstanding GCSE results

Staff and pupils at Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) are celebrating another hugely successful GCSE results day this year with around two thirds of results coming in at grades 9 – 7 and well over 80% of grades at 9 – 6.

21 girls (around a third of the cohort) have achieved nine or more 9 – 7 grades. Top grades have been achieved across all subjects taken at GCSE and pupils will now go onto study a varied range of A levels at the all-girl school as they embark upon the next stage of their education.

NHSG Head, Amanda Hardie, said: “It’s been a truly joyous morning seeing the girls collect their results after two years of hard work and dedication. The run up to results day can be a nerve-wracking time, but we always have every faith in our pupils who continue to make us exceptionally proud year on year. This year’s cohort have shown an impressive sense of maturity and they have tackled the challenge of GCSEs head-on.

“These exceptional GCSE results have laid the foundations for exciting new chapters for the girls as they step into Sixth Form at NHSG, and where their all-girl education will continue to ignite their sharp intellect and provide them with the space to grow in confidence and as individuals. I can’t wait to follow their journeys over the next two years.”

One pupil who’s especially delighted with her GCSE results is Lyza Halaka, who has been attending NHSG since leaving Ukraine with her family. Lyza, who joined NHSG in Year 8, has achieved four grade 9s, two grade 8s and three grade 7s.

Lyza said: “I’ve really enjoyed all my subjects and the teachers have been so helpful. It was difficult at first because of the change in curriculum, and because English required a higher proficiency, but I feel that NHSG brought out the very best in me and I can now look forward to studying towards my A Levels and getting a place at my first-choice university.”

Another pupil who’s celebrating her achievements today is Miriam Ozalp, who has been awarded an impressive eight grade 9s and two grade 8s. Miriam now has her sights set on a creative pathway at NHSG’s Sixth Form.

Miriam said: “I felt a bit nervous this morning but I’m really happy with my results. I plan to take Maths, English Literature as well as either Drama or Art at A level. I’m really excited about being able to do the subjects I love every day.”

Miriam has ambitions to work in the arts sector where she looks forward to “creating art on a daily basis, possibly in fashion or film”. She added: “School has provided me with the opportunity to explore my subjects more creatively. The Art and Drama departments have been so supportive and NHSG has such a great atmosphere. I love the all-girl environment – everyone is always rooting for each other – teachers and pupils alike.”

Amanda added: “With the 2025 results days now drawing to a close, all NHSG’s A Level and GCSE pupils have a short but well-deserved period to relax and celebrate their success before Sixth Form and University beckons. As we prepare for the new academic year, I would like to pay tribute to the exceptional commitment from our staff whose tireless guidance has supported the girls so well and empowered them to be the best versions of themselves.”
