Power of Women Ambassador Programme fights gender stereotypes in Tees Valley

Pennyman Primary Academy recently took part in the Power of Women Primary Ambassador Programme. The Power of Women is a charity which aims to empower women and girls across Tees Valley.  Pennyman is part of the Tees Valley Education Trust.

Role Models

Power of Women is a Tees Valley seek to provide the young women of the Tees Valley with the role models, inspiration, resources and information to take control over the choices they make.  The charity currently has a Primary Ambassador Programme active across 12 schools within the Tees Valley. They say:

“The basis of the programme is to lift and shift aspirations and provide equal access to opportunities – but it’s not just for girls! We encourage boys to join our ambassador programme too, as we can’t shift their perceptions unless they know what we do and how they can get involved. The programme consists of a series of activities and workshops and links schools with a sponsor business who act as the school’s partner. They provide support during the programme and offer opportunities such as work experience. We focus on enhancing our ambassador’s confidence, their ambitions and changing gender stereotypes.”

Schools involved include Pennyman Primary Academy, Thorntree Academy and Brambles Primary Academy in Middlesbrough, Clavering Primary School, Eldon Grove Academy and Rossmere Academy in Hartlepool, New Silksworth Academy in Sunderland, Dormanstown Primary Academy in Redcar, and Wilton Primary Academy in Wilton.

Power at Pennyman

Tees Valley Education’s Pennyman Primary Academy recently took part in the programme. Rebecca Tate, a Teacher from Pennyman commented:

“Working with Power of Women has been a fantastic experience for our children.  They recently took part in workshops where they learned about the inequalities between men and women in the workforce and the roles which are open to women. The children were astounded by the difference in opportunities and salaries, and many continued their discussions into the playground. We are hugely proud of our new ambassadors for being successful in the interview process and are excited to work with Power of Women over the course of the year. “

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East commented:

“Schools North East appreciates the important work that Power of Women do for schools in the region, breaking down stereotypes and empowering students to raise their future aspirations. It is always wonderful to see local business leaders engaging with students to help inspire them. It’s great that Pennyman Primary enjoyed their recent session with Power of Women and that they are taking part in the Ambassador Programme.”
