Ofsted Report 2017: The North East Outlook

Ofsted’s 2016/17 annual report gave some comments on the regional picture:

  • 66 per cent of secondary schools in the region are rated as good or outstanding. This constitutes a fall from 75% last year, and is below the national average of 79%.
  • In Gateshead 30% of schools fall into this category, while the figure is 50% for Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland.
  • Ofsted highlighted 130 schools across England that had not been rated above RI at any point since 2005, which received significant media coverage locally. Four of these schools were in the North East.
  • However, this list is likely unrepresentative as a school’s Ofsted grading history is wiped after sponsored conversion or re-brokering. Ofsted has proposed changing the way statistics are presented to re-add the past grades of turnaround academies and a consultation is ongoing.
