Capital culture: Year 10 students bring GCSE learning to life in London
Sixty Year 10 students from Seaton Valley High School swapped their usual classrooms for the sights, sounds and culture of London this week, taking part in a two-day residential designed to enrich their GCSE studies and broaden their experiences beyond the curriculum.

Combining learning with exploration, the trip gave students the opportunity to see history, literature and the arts come to life, connecting classroom knowledge with real-world experiences and helping to build their cultural capital.
What a brilliant way to end the academic year!
A city full of learning opportunities
The carefully planned itinerary offered students a packed programme of activities across some of London’s most iconic locations, including:
Exploring world-class collections: Students visited the Natural History Museum and The British Museum, engaging with exhibitions that brought science, history and global cultures to life.
A journey through theatre: The group experienced two very different theatrical performances, watching Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at the historic Globe Theatre before enjoying the West End production of The Devil Wears Prada.
Seeing London from a new perspective: A trip on the London Eye gave students the chance to take in panoramic views of the capital and reflect on the scale and history of the city around them.
The residential provided valuable opportunities for students to develop confidence, independence and curiosity, while strengthening their understanding of topics linked to their GCSE studies.
A credit to their school and community
While the experiences and activities created plenty of memorable moments, it was the students’ attitude and behaviour throughout the trip that impressed staff most.
Trip leader Mr Carter said: “We are absolutely thrilled with how our Year 10s conducted themselves. Throughout the duration of the trip, the students demonstrated outstanding maturity and engagement. They were a true credit to both our school and the wider community, setting a fantastic example at every venue we visited.”
Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: ““Opportunities like this show the incredible work schools do to broaden pupils’ experiences and help young people develop confidence, curiosity and ambition beyond the classroom. It’s fantastic to see Year 10 students embracing these opportunities and representing their school so positively.”
