North East Schools attend Celebration at Downing Street

Teachers from schools in the North East attended a reception at Downing Street to celebrate their hard work and commitment to providing our region’s children with an excellent education.

Over one hundred teachers from across the country headed to London for the special event, which was hosted by the Prime Minister Theresa May and Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds.

The North East schools* in attendance were:

Parkside Academy, Durham

The Academy at Shotton Hall, Durham

St. Peter’s Elwick CofE Primary School, Hartlepool

West Park Primary School, Hartlepool

Whitley Bay School, North Tyneside

Newcomen Primary School, Redcar and Cleveland

George Washington Primary School, Sunderland

Education Secretary Damian Hinds said of the event: “Whenever I ask people about what they most remember from school, they always talk about the teacher who inspired them.

“There are no great schools without great teachers and this reception is a small recognition of the incredible dedication and hard work we see day in, day out, across the teaching profession.

“We now have the most remarkably talented generation of teachers, and it was a pleasure to recognise the commitment and hard work of just some of the 457,000 teachers we have working in classrooms across the country to raise standards for pupils.”
