North East school leaders Raise £3,511 for life-changing causes at Patron’s Dinner

More than 500 CEOs, Head Teachers and senior leaders from partner schools and trusts came together for the fifteenth annual Schools North East Patron’s Dinner in March, an evening celebrating the people who help hold the region’s school communities together.

Among the many highlights of the night, one of the most powerful moments came through the charity raffle, which brought the room together in support of two deeply meaningful causes: the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and “Mrs Park’s Park.”

Together, an incredible £3,511 was raised that will both support vital MND research and care, and help bring to life a special legacy project at Hartburn Primary School.

A community rallying around one of its own

The story behind “Mrs Park’s Park” is one that resonated deeply with everyone in the room.

Claire Park, Head Teacher of Hartburn Primary School, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2025 and has since had to step away from the profession she loves. Prior to her diagnosis, she had been planning to transform the school’s Key Stage 2 playground into a safe, engaging space for pupils.

In a powerful show of solidarity, colleagues across the region have rallied around that vision, determined to complete the project in her honour.

Reflecting on the support she has received, Claire said: “Your kindness, compassion and support means more than I can fully express. Thank you again for everything you do, not only for individuals like me, but for the countless children and families across the North East whose lives you are helping to shape for the better.”

She also spoke about the personal impact of her diagnosis and the significance of the Patron’s Dinner: “It has been a devastating time and I am heartbroken to have had to retire from my role as Head Teacher at just 46… However, I was deeply moved and grateful that you chose to raise the profile of Motor Neurone Disease and support the park at Hartburn.”

Making a difference beyond the room

The funds raised will also support the wider work of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, helping individuals and families affected by the condition.

In a letter of thanks following the event, the Association shared: “The funds you’ve raised will go a long way in supporting individuals and families affected by MND, helping to fund research, improve care, and provide hope for the future.”

They also recognised the wider impact of the evening: “Beyond the money, your efforts have also raised awareness and brought the educational community together in support.”

A defining moment of collective support

With prizes including a Fortnum & Mason Springtime Hamper and a signed Sunderland AFC 25/26 season shirt, the raffle captured the generosity and spirit of the sector.

More importantly, it reflected something fundamental about the North East education community: when one member needs support, the whole network steps forward.

A sincere thank you goes to everyone who contributed, donated prizes, and took part on the night. To find out more about the causes or to continue supporting, please follow the link.
