NHSG Students Set Sights on Bright Futures as A Level Results Revealed

Students at Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) are celebrating a hugely successful A Level results day and are looking forward to the next stage of their journeys, with exciting plans for the future now confirmed.

This year’s results see more than two thirds of grades awarded at A* – B reflecting NHSG’s commitment to outstanding academic success for every girl. They will be embarking on degree courses at some of the country’s top universities.

The vast majority of students at the all-girl school have gained places at their first-choice university, with over half of the cohort applying for STEM based degrees – a clear demonstration of the School’s role in breaking down barriers for women entering STEM careers. Students are also pursuing highly competitive arts-based courses, underlining the breadth of talent across the Year Group, and where 100% of grades have been awarded at A* – B.

NHSG Head, Amanda Hardie, said: “As we move into our 150th anniversary year, we’re delighted to be celebrating another phenomenal set of A Level results. The girls have worked so hard, and seeing the joy on their faces today has been an absolute privilege. Being in an all-girl environment that puts girls first really does empower our students, allowing ambitions to thrive and confidence to soar. These results are testament to that — an all-girl education truly makes all the difference.

“The unique education we offer is designed to bring out the very best in all our students and help them flourish in today’s competitive landscape — whether at university, in the workplace, or in life more generally. When our girls leave us, we know they are happy, confident, and talented young women with the world at their feet.”

NHSG students will now embark on a diverse range of university and higher education courses across the UK — from Mathematics and Engineering to Architecture and Filmmaking.

Top-performing student Bella Russell, from Ponteland has achieved A*AAAin Geography, Maths, Further Maths and Physics and is delighted to have secured her place at the University of Sheffield to study General Engineering.

Being in an all-girl school it never crossed Bella’s mind that engineering was a traditionally male-dominated discipline. Bella said: “I met NHSG alumnae who came in to school to speak to us about their careers, women who were working in F1 or renewable energy, and they really inspired me and helped me see that, with my love of maths and physics, I could do it too.

“It wasn’t until I visited universities on open days that I realised it was a more male-dominated path, but by that point I was confident in what I was doing and knew I had as much right to be there as they did.”

Emmy Dobson from Newcastle, was equally thrilled after collecting A*s in Drama and Art and As in English Literature and Classical Civilisation. She will be heading to University of the Arts London to study a one-year course in Design, Media and Screen.

Emmy said: “I am so excited to be studying in London and a course that combines all of the arts disciplines I love from traditional art methods to digital screen projects.”

Talking about her school years, Emmy added: “NHSG has been like my rock. I’ve loved my time at school, I’ve made friends for life and my teachers have really helped me overcome my insecurities and grow in confidence. I’ve got to perform on the stage, come up with weird and wonderful art installations and even complete a research project on David Bowie. I’ll always be proud to say I studied at NHSG but now it’s time to flee the nest, explore different arts disciplines and see where my passions take me.”

Amanda added: “We are so incredibly proud of all the girls graduating from NHSG this year and look forward to hearing more from them as they make their mark on the world. But for now, it’s time for them to relax and celebrate with friends and family — they truly deserve it.”
