NE to trial cash incentives for maths and physics teachers
The Department for Education has announced a pilot scheme to offer cash incentives to Maths and Physics teachers in the first years of their careers. The initiative will be open to schools in the North East, Yorkshire & the Humber and Opportunity Areas.
Maths and Physics teachers will receive an additional £2,000 each year after tax under the scheme to support them in the early stages of their career and to increase rates of retention among teachers of these subjects.
The funding will be offered to all Maths and Physics teachers for the first five years of their teaching career.
The pilot will initially run for the academic years 2019-20 and 2020-21.
The announcement builds upon the £24m targeted to improving school outcomes in the region as part of Opportunity North East programme and the Early Careers Framework which will be piloted in the region a year earlier than most other parts of the country.
In support of the initiative, Schools North East Director, Mike Parker, said:
“High-quality teaching has a profoundly positive impact on children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. There are many factors that account for the disparity in outcomes for pupils in economically disadvantaged areas when compared with more affluent ones, but the availability and retention of teaching talent is among the greatest.
“Physics and maths are vital disciplines for the vibrant and successful sectors that are driving the economy in the North East. Investing in recruitment and retention of teachers is essential not only to the future success of pupils in this area but also to the long-term economic outlook of the region.”
