From school to gallery: Lemington Riverside Primary School’s art takes centre stage

A group of young artists from The Bridge at Lemington Riverside Primary School have been making waves in the art world with their latest project – and now their stunning creations are on display at the Baltic Art Gallery on Gateshead Quayside! It doesn’t get much better than that…

As part of the exciting Baltic Stars initiative, these talented children spent eight weeks collaborating with renowned artist Katie Watson. Together, they explored the beauty of the natural world through shapes, textures, and colors, pushing the boundaries of creativity.

A resounding positive impact on the community

Using recycled and repurposed materials, they experimented with a variety of mark-making techniques, bringing their unique artistic visions to life. From painting and printmaking to sculpture, spray-painting, and drawing, they fearlessly dived into different artistic mediums, producing breathtaking results.

The Bridge at Lemington Riverside is a pioneering space that connects a mainstream and specialist classroom, offering children with significant additional SEND the opportunity to thrive in a supportive environment. This innovative approach allows students to access a tailored timetable of support while remaining part of their local mainstream primary school.

A mesmerising exhibition for us all to enjoy

The culmination of their artistic journey is “Our Mark on Nature,” a mesmerising exhibition now on display at the Baltic until April 27, 2025. This project has not only honed their artistic talents but also empowered them with newfound confidence and self-expression.

Craig Heeley, Head Teacher of Lemington Riverside Primary School, said: “We couldn’t be prouder of these young creatives for their passion and dedication. If you’re looking for a burst of inspiration, don’t miss the chance to see their incredible work in person at the Baltic!”

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “Congratulations to all the talented students and dedicated staff on a truly successful art project! Your creativity and hard work have shone through. We you all the very best for the exhibition, and we can’t wait to see.”
