Hummersknott Academy students shine with GCSE results

Hummersknott Academy students have received their GCSE results today.

Karla Chang hopes to become a doctor after shining as the top performing student at Hummersknott Academy, in Darlington.

Karla, who achieved eight Grade 9s and a Grade 8, said:

“I’m overwhelmed and relieved that all the hard work paid off.”

She plans to go to Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College to study maths, chemistry, and biology, adding:

“I want to help people and make a difference so I’d love to be a doctor one day.”

Artur Zavhorodnii arrived in this country last year as a refugee from war-torn Ukraine with hardly any English.

Thanks to the support of Hummersknott Academy, in Darlington, he has passed several GCSEs, include a Grade 6 in Maths.

Artur, who came to Darlington from the Ukrainian city of Odesa with his parents, said:

“It’s been hard but I’ve had a lot of support from the school and made friends.”

He now plans to go to Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, with ambitions to become a data scientist.

Head teacher Nick Merifield said:

“Artur has been an inspiration to us all. To come here from a war zone and to have his life totally disrupted, and to have done as well as he has, is remarkable. We’re very proud of him.”
