Almost 65% of pupils in our region scored 5+A*-C grades at GCSE level, below the national average of 66.5% in the latest performance tables.

The highest performing Local Authority area in the North East is North Tyneside, where 72% of pupils achieved 5+ A*-C grades. They also topped the national average of 91% for 5+A*-G grades by 1.8 percentage points.

The region as a whole is below the national average of 94.3% for 5+A*-G with 93.7%.

The Department for Education hailed the performance of academy schools nationally, saying they “lead the way” in the latest performance tables. However, the official release document of the revised GCSEs qualified that statement, saying: “converter academies have a higher proportion of pupils achieving 5+A*-C grades including English and maths than the average state-funded schools. This may be explained by the fact that these were already high performing schools that chose to convert to academies.”
