GCSE success at Ashington Academy

Students and staff at Ashington Academy are celebrating some wonderful GCSE results today which, along with their improved Ofsted grade, tell a story of total transformation at this now high achieving Northumberland school.

In total 17% of students achieved the very top grades 9 – 7 (A*-A), 76% achieved a grade 4+ pass in both English and maths and 56% achieved a grade 5+ strong pass in English and maths.

Top performers at the Academy include:

• Carly Haefner – nine grade 9s and one grade 8.

• Lorien Dodds-Crouth – eight grade 9s two grade 8s.

• Andrew Henderson – four grade 9s, two grade 8s, three grade 7s and a grade 6.

• Harry Redshaw – two grade 9s, seven grade 8s, and one grade 6.

• Sonia Teleshyk – three grade 9s, two grade 8s, one grade 7, three grade 6s and a grade 5.

Sonia Teleshyk joined the school in Year 10 after fleeing her home in Ukraine due to the war. English is her third language, so her results are particularly impressive!

Almost all of the school’s top performers plan on joining its successful sixth form, NE6, to study a range of subjects including chemistry, biology, English literature, maths, further maths psychology, French and product design.

Yvonne Weston, Headteacher at Ashington Academy said:

“Congratulations to all of our students who achieved these fantastic results today. The disruption these children endured because of the pandemic was unprecedented, but they were determined to work hard and do their best – and they have! Having undergone huge changes over the past few years, Ashington Academy is now a brilliant place for children to learn and these results show that parents are right to place their trust in us. These results are not just numbers or grades on a paper; they are a testament to the perseverance, diligence, and enthusiasm our students have brought to their learning journeys. As they move on to their next academic adventure, we are confident they will continue to shine and make all of us proud.”

Chair of governors, Les Morgan, added:

“These GCSE results reflect the dedication, resilience, and hard work that both our students and staff have put in over the past academic year. Our pupils have demonstrated exceptional commitment in their studies and the success they have achieved is not merely a testament to their academic abilities but to their characters and positive attitudes. I want to thank the school’s remarkable teaching staff who have consistently provided our students with the guidance, support, and resources they needed. Their adaptability, passion, and dedication have played an instrumental role in this success.”
