Director of Education’s response on proposed  C of E school closures

Paul Rickeard, Director of Education for the Diocese of  Newcastle, has responded to last week’s story regarding the potential close of C of E rural schools.

Paul Rickeard said:

“While there may be concern nationally about the future of rural church schools, we in Newcastle Diocese are absolutely committed to doing everything in our power to keep our schools open in our unique educational landscape. On the whole our rural schools are thriving and providing our children, often living in isolated areas, with the high standard of education they deserve.

“Inevitably, operating very small schools does have its challenges and we have sadly had to close a very small number of our schools in recent years because of falling pupil numbers. It’s ensured the best educational outcomes for children are maintained.

“However, we know that in many cases rural schools are the heart that keep their communities alive and the presence of a school can be the difference between some local communities surviving or disintegrating – it can be what attracts young families to live and stay in the area.  We recognise this and it’s why we remain absolutely committed to our rural schools and believe they play a vital role in the life of our diocese.”
