Darlington school on a mission to stop food waste
Corporation Road Community Primary School in Darlington is proud to be helping its local community, while simultaneously battling food waste.
At the beginning of the very first lockdown, staff at the school began collecting food for it to be distributed to local families in need. Since the return of children onsite, volunteers have taken over, as the school is the first in the area to become a member of ‘The Bread and Butter Thing’ – a nationally recognised charity that creates bespoke packages of support to local communities.
Addressing the way his school rallied together at the beginning of lockdown, Deputy Head Teacher Gareth McManus told Schools North East that, at Corporation Road, ‘we’re part of the community. When the lockdown came in, our staff were there to help the people who are working hard’, commenting that a number of families in the area continue to use the hub.
As well as going above and beyond at the height of the pandemic, Mr McManus went on to explain that the school staff continue to help those in need, with a breakfast club that is free to everyone, and are always looking for ways to help the community.
As more and more families are using food banks, due to the mounting cost of living crisis, it is hubs such as Corporation Road Community Primary School that truly are going above and beyond for their community.
