Sunderland nursery school celebrates National Inclusion Honour

A Sunderland nursery school is celebrating outstanding national recognition after being named a National Inclusion Champion, one of only eight schools across the UK to receive the prestigious award.
Mill Hill Nursery School, based in Doxford Park, received the accolade from the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM), recognising organisations that demonstrate an exceptional and sector-leading commitment to inclusion, equality and opportunity. We’re beaming with pride.
Recognition for truly inclusive practice
The Ofsted Outstanding–rated nursery was selected for its whole-school approach to inclusive education, where every child is supported to thrive.
The award was formally presented during a special celebration event attended by children, parents and governors, with Annette Snowden, IQM representative, presenting the school with its National Inclusion Champion banner.
Putting every child at the heart of learning
Head Teacher Sarah Dixon-Jones and Deputy Head Teacher Vicky Cooper said the recognition was a proud moment for the school community.
They said: “We are really thrilled to receive this national recognition. At Mill Hill, each child is placed at the centre of their learning journey, with a curriculum tailored to their unique interests, strengths and needs.”
They added: “Inclusive practice is embedded across our entire school community — staff, governors, families and children — creating a culture where everyone truly belongs. Our innovative Digital Atelier provides creative and accessible opportunities for all children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, to explore, connect and communicate.”
A national example from the North East
Schools North East Director Chris Zarraga congratulated the school on its achievement, saying: “Mill Hill Nursery School’s recognition as a National Inclusion Champion is something the whole region can take pride in. It showcases how North East settings are leading the way nationally by placing inclusion, equality and opportunity at the heart of everything they do from the very earliest years.”
Praised by inclusion leaders
Joe McCann, CEO of Inclusion Quality Mark, also praised the school’s work, saying: “We continue to be blown away by the exemplary inclusive practice happening in IQM schools. These schools embody the IQM vision of supporting inclusive practice and increasing life chances.”
A proud moment for early years in the North East
Being named a National Inclusion Champion further cements Mill Hill Nursery School’s reputation as a beacon of best practice in early years education, and highlights the powerful impact that inclusive values can have on children, families and communities across the North East. Huge congratulations once again to all those involved.
