BREAKING NEWS: Schools White Paper delayed until “early in the New Year”
The Department for Education has confirmed that the long-awaited Schools White Paper will not be published until “early in the New Year”
Since the government announced the Autumn 2025 Schools White Paper in the Spending Review, education leaders have been anticipating significant reforms to SEND provision, pupil behaviour policies, and school accountability.
This afternoon, Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson confirmed that the Department for Education will delay publication of the White Paper until next year.
As the voice of all 1,150 schools across the North East, we understand the frustration this delay will cause and recognise the urgent need for clarity. Schools require a clear and consistent direction to plan effectively, support pupils, and deliver the best possible outcomes; for every child, in every school, and for the future of our region.
COMING SOON: SCHOOLS NORTH EAST WHITE PAPER EVENT
For school and trust leaders, the Schools White Paper represents a turning point for education in our region. While official guidance is still pending, leaders must act now to prepare for reforms that could reshape how schools are funded, supported, and held accountable.
A renewed focus on tackling disadvantage — particularly the barriers facing white working-class boys — is also expected, with direct implications for budgets, staffing, and long-term strategy.
With the White Paper’s release now delayed until early next year, the Schools North East team is already planning a dedicated event to unpack its key themes, challenges, and opportunities, helping you stay ahead and lead with confidence through these changes.
Details coming soon — keep an eye out and book early to secure your place.
