Wyvern Academy: Leading the way in young writers’ success

There were many smiling faces at Wyvern Academy in Darlington, part of Consilium Academies, this week—and it’s not hard to understand why! The school has earned the prestigious title of being the most published school in the Young Writers book, a nationally recognised collection of short stories penned by budding young authors.

This incredible achievement highlights the creative talent of Wyvern’s students and the school’s commitment to fostering a love for reading and storytelling.

Nurturing creativity through “mission chaos”

This summer, students in Years 7, 8, and 9 at Wyvern rose to the challenge of the Young Writers competition. Their mission? To craft a compelling short story in less than 100 words under the captivating theme, “Mission Chaos.”

This was no easy feat. Writing a micro-story requires sharp creativity, a mastery of concise storytelling, and the ability to hook readers with just a few sentences. Yet Wyvern students embraced the challenge and their success speaks for itself.

Out of thousands of entries from across the country, a staggering 52 stories written by Wyvern students were chosen for publication in the Young Writers anthology. That’s 52 students whose imaginations and hard work have earned them a place in print! A memory they’ll likely cherish forever.

A school that inspires writers

For Wyvern Academy, this achievement is more than just a proud moment; it’s a reflection of the school’s vibrant English curriculum and its commitment to nurturing young talent.

Daryl Henson, Lead Teacher of English & Drama, shared the philosophy behind the school’s success: “At Wyvern Academy, we aim to embrace the motto of ‘reading like writers and writing like readers’ within our English curriculum.

“Our aim is to inspire our pupils to build a love of both reading and writing, and so we are absolutely delighted that within this publication of the Young Writers series, 52 Wyvern pupils were selected to be published.”

The school’s English team has worked tirelessly to create an environment where students feel inspired and confident to express themselves. This recognition as the most published school is a testament to their dedication and the students’ talent.

Celebrating young authors

Being published at such a young age is a dream come true for many students. It’s more than just seeing their names in print—it’s a confidence boost and a reminder of what they’re capable of achieving.

The entire Wyvern community is celebrating this milestone. Mr. Henson expressed his pride, saying: “The entire English team is so pleased for our pupils, and we are thrilled that Wyvern Academy achieved the honour of being the most published school in this competition. Congratulations to all the students who now have their names in print.”

And Schools North East is celebrating too! Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “This accomplishment sets a high bar for future Wyvern students, inspiring them to dream big and embrace their creativity.

“With a strong foundation in reading and writing, and a school that champions student success, the next generation of Wyvern storytellers is sure to leave their mark.”
