River Tyne Academy celebrates GCSE for learners excluded from schools

River Tyne Academy, in Gateshead, provides education for learners who have been excluded from school or who are at risk of being excluded. Staff use a relational approach to support learners to achieve their best outcomes including qualifications, return to mainstream school and moving into post-16 education, employment and training.

Rory’s results

Rory Cowen makes a roaring success.  Permanently excluded from mainstream in year 8, he joined the team at River Tyne Academy.  Rory stated:

“The culture of mutual respect at the school and supportive staff helped him settle down and motivated him to work hard”

His hard work has paid off as he has achieved 8 GCSEs, including English and Mathematics at Grade 4 and above.  Mum Emma and Dad Paul, said:

“The school have gone the extra mile, even making home visits throughout covid to make sure Rory was ok and they had everything they needed.”

They noted that the staff are amazing and since starting at River Tyne they noticed a big difference in Rory’s behaviour.

Andrew Edwards who taught Rory Mathematics since he started with the school, said:

“He has achieved a grade 5 in Maths and was a pleasure to teach, it has been wonderful watching him grow and develop from a completely disengaged young man to the mature and hard working young adult he is today.”

Rory is going on to study A Level Business Studies, Art and Design and Film Studies at Newcastle 6th Form in September with a view to completing a degree in photography in the future to support his aspiration of becoming a photographer.
