I am thrilled to share our outstanding experience with North Yorkshire Employment Services - Payroll. From the moment we decided to switch providers just over a year ago, the onboarding process was seamless and efficient. The team provided personalised assistance every step of the way, ensuring that all our payroll data was accurately transferred and configured. The team's expert knowledge of the education sector and both teaching and non-teaching terms and conditions and pension regulations was apparent from day one.
One of the standout aspects of their service is the accuracy and timeliness of payroll processing. Our employees are always accurately paid on time, and any resulting payroll discrepancies are swiftly resolved thanks to their proactive and knowledgeable support team. Their reporting tools have also provided us with deeper insights into our payroll expenditure, resulting in more effective financial planning and decision-making.
Moreover, the compliance features have been a game-changer for us, ensuring that we always adhere to the latest tax guidance, pension and employment law without any hassle. This has significantly reduced our administrative burden as an employer and minimised the risk of costly errors.
Overall, the North Yorkshire Payroll Service has transformed our payroll operations, making them more efficient, accurate, and stress-free. I highly recommend their services to any School or Trust looking for a reliable and top-notch payroll solution. Their commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction is truly commendable. Goathland Primary School
The NYES website has been an invaluable tool for our school. In particular, the Resources page stands out as especially helpful—it provides clear, well-organised information and templates that support our day-to-day school management and strategic planning. We’ve found the site to be a central hub for accessing and managing the various services we use, from HR support to training and development. It’s user-friendly, efficient, and allows us to stay informed and responsive to the changing needs of our school. I would highly recommend the NYES website to other school leaders and education professionals. It saves time, enhances our access to key services, and helps us make better-informed decisions for our pupils and staff. |

New UK Fire Safety Standards 2025
At NYES, we understand the importance of creating a safe learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. Our Health and Safety team is competent and highly qualified, with extensive training in applying relevant fire safety legislation and best practices to school settings. While senior leaders in educational settings may not be qualified or trained in fire risk assessments, they are still responsible for the safety of everyone who uses the site. This is where our expertise comes in.
The Head Teacher as the Responsible Person, or senior managers within the educational setting, may be criminally liable, if there is not a suitable Fire Risk Assessment in place and completed by a competent person. Competence should be assessed by a third party, professional body, or through a structured framework (e.g. Tiered Fire Risk Assessment Registers). A fire risk assessment will also need to be reviewed regularly depending on the risk. Your competent Fire Risk Assessor can advise on how frequently such an assessment should be updated.
New Fire Safety Standards
To help navigate the challenges in evaluating competence when it comes to fire risk assessment, the new British Standard, BS 8674: Built Environment - Framework for Competence of Individual Fire Risk Assessors - Code of Practice was published on 15th August 2025. This standard has been developed, with the collaboration of those working across the sector, to recognise the need to improve the competence, consistency and accountability of those commissioning and delivering fire risk assessments and is part of approach to improving building and fire safety systems arising from the tragic Grenfell Tower fire.
BS 8674 sets out criteria for three core levels of competence in fire risk assessment, which are known as Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. This is to ensure those delivering fire risk assessments have the competence to deliver these and reflects the skill set required to understand the complexity and risks of the building or way it operates.
Under the new fire safety regulations 2025 most schools will be described as “moderate fire risk premises” requiring a fire risk assessor with an “Intermediate” competence. Whilst this is a new standard, our team of fire risk assessors either already work at this level or are being trained, supervised or mentored to achieve the level of competence required.
How NYES can help ensure your school is protected
NYES Health and Safety Service is dedicated to supporting schools. We have a team of dedicated and fully qualified advisors who will work closely with you to ensure you receive a fully compliant fire risk assessment. These advisors are members of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers and registered on Fire Risk Assessors Register.
Our advisors are equipped to conduct comprehensive fire risk assessments across a wide range of educational institutions, including primary and secondary schools, colleges and those schools with vulnerable pupils and those who have residential accommodation. Each assessment will undergo internal verification by a fully qualified assessment validator, ensuring the highest standards of quality and compliance are consistently upheld.
NYES Health and Safety Fire Risk Assessments
Our fire risk assessments are designed to help schools achieve compliance and ensure the safety of all occupants. Here's what our service provides:
- Everyone on our team is a competent fire risk assessor as required under the British Standard, BS 8674: Built Environment - Framework for Competence of Individual Fire Risk Assessors - Code of Practice.
- Everyone on our team is a member of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM). We are committed to professional development, best practices, and improvement.
- As part of IFSM membership each advisor submits a number of fire risk assessments to the IFSM. This external evaluation ensures the risk assessments have the highest standards of compliance and safety.
- The team is part of the Tiered Fire Risk Assessors Register (TFRAR), which is a comprehensive register organised by IFSM. The register classifies assessors into three tiers based on competency. Our team is either already on the register or working towards inclusion.
- Each fire risk assessment is internally verified to ensure that each FRA we send out meets industry standards. This also fosters continuous improvements in our FRAs.
With you every step of the way
Further information about the service is available here.

Kick Vaping Out of Schools: Real-Time Vape Detection Technology from NYES Digital
Vaping in schools is becoming a serious concern, with rechargeable devices replacing banned disposables. These high-capacity vapes can deliver up to 6,000 puffs and contain 20mg of nicotine—equivalent to 40 cigarettes. To support schools in tackling this issue, NYES Digital and NYnet are partnering with Soter Technologies to introduce advanced vape detection technology designed to monitor and reduce vaping incidents in real time.
The Growing Challenge of Vaping in Schools
Recent data from ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) reveals that:
- 18% of 11–17-year-olds have tried vaping
- 72% have been exposed to vape promotion
- Concerns are rising over the presence of THC and other drugs in vape liquids
These trends highlight the urgent need for vaping prevention strategies and school safeguarding solutions that go beyond education alone.
Introducing Flysense Vape Monitoring Systems
Developed by Soter Technologies, Flysense is a cutting-edge vape sensor installation designed specifically for educational environments. It detects:
- Vape aerosol
- Nicotine
- THC
The system sends real-time alerts to designated staff via an online portal, allowing schools to respond quickly and effectively. A central dashboard enables easy management of sensitivity settings, user access, and alert preferences.
Benefits of Vape Detection Technology for Schools
- Supports school safeguarding policies
- Identifies vaping hotspots and patterns
- Enables proactive intervention and reporting
- Helps schools understand the scale of the problem
- Reduces health risks and improves student wellbeing
NYES Digital & NYnet Partnership
NYES Digital is working in partnership with NYnet to roll out Flysense across UK schools. This collaboration brings proven vape monitoring systems from the US education sector to support UK safeguarding efforts.

Not using your IT devices for 6 weeks can throw up some unexpected issues on your return with expired passwords, unplugged kit and updated software to name a few. The start of September is the busiest time of year for our Help Desk and Support Teams, particularly during the first week. Rest assured, we have our full complement of staff out in the field on visits, manning the phones, web chat, and email.
Should you have to wait longer than usual for a response, please bear with us as we try and address all of our calls in order of priority and time of contact. We aim to get to everyone within our SLAs and get your IT issue sorted as soon as possible.
From the 14 October 2025, Microsoft will stop providing security updates for your Windows 10 devices. To ensure that schools across North Yorkshire remain secure and protected from the risks of running outdated systems, NYES Digital is here to assist you.
Do you know how many Windows 10 devices you currently have in your school? Have you planned how and when you will replace or upgrade these devices?
To help you with this transition, NYES Digital is offering a free computer audit/assessment for all NYES Digital customers. This assessment will identify which devices can be upgraded and which may need replacing. Based on the results, we can create tailored quotations to help ensure all your devices are either migrated to Windows 11 or securely decommissioned, avoiding any risks associated with unsupported Windows 10 machines after October.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact nyes.digital@northyorks.gov.uk or reach out to your NYES Relationship Manager. There is also further information through the link below.

The start of the new academic year is the perfect time to review and refresh your school website.
A well-maintained, up-to-date site is essential for keeping parents and students informed and engaged as the new school year begins.
Keeping your website accurate and current is crucial. Outdated information can cause confusion and frustration, leading to unnecessary phone calls and emails. A quick review now can save you a lot of time and effort in September.
Here are a few key areas that are often overlooked:
- Term dates and school calendar – parents often visit a school website to check term dates. Make sure the 2025/26 academic year is clearly displayed and easy to find, along with inset days, half-term breaks, and key events.
- Uniform – is your uniform information up to date? Check for changes to the policy, suppliers, or requirements for different year groups. An accurate uniform page helps parents prepare properly and avoids last-minute surprises.
- School menus – ensure lunch menus are correct and up to date, including payment details or dietary information.
- Key notices and announcements – keep important updates easy to find on your homepage. This could include class announcements, changes to drop-off procedures, or details of welcome back events.
It’s also worth considering the overall health of your website. A well-maintained site not only improves the experience for parents and staff but can also support compliance with Ofsted requirements.
Checking areas such as navigation, mobile responsiveness, accessibility, and how easy it is to find information will help ensure your site continues to meet expectations.
If you’d like any support with this, the NYES Digital Web Team is here to help.
There is also a range of training courses and events that have been designed to meet the needs of your whole school community, delivered in a way that's accessible and convenient to you.

Day In The Life - NYES Digital School Technician
Our NYES Digital School Technician service provides invaluable support to schools to ensure they are always online and their systems are not only efficient but safe and compliant for the sake of all users.
Today we wanted to share a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a school tech. We’ll take a look at the essential tasks and challenges that come with maintaining and developing the ICT infrastructure in a school. From routine maintenance and troubleshooting to supporting staff and students with their tech needs, every day brings new opportunities and hurdles. Whether its upgrading systems, ensuring backups are secure, or simply keeping everything running smoothly, the role of a school tech is crucial yet often unseen.
Hear from Richard Freytag who has been working with schools for over 23 years.
How does a typical day in your role look? My day starts early, ensuring that all systems are up and running before the school day begins. I begin with routine maintenance tasks such as backing up anti-virus software, verifying that all backups are correct, and reviewing any failed backups to ensure they are constantly monitored. Fixing connection issues and supporting the school in finding solutions are also part of my morning checklist. Throughout the day, I also support the school with various development tasks. This includes assisting with Windows 10 issues and upgrades to Windows 11, upgrading servers, PCs, laptops, and tablets, and setting up new equipment. Staying proactive is key to keeping the school online and providing advice on ICT infrastructure. With the NYES Digital School Tech service, even if I am not on site the school can access support through the NYES Digital helpdesk too, so they always have someone there to resolve any issues and queries. This ensures that any problems are dealt with promptly, minimizing downtime.
What do you think are the main benefits of utilising a NYES Digital School Technician?
Having an expert on-site to navigate the complexities of school ICT systems is invaluable. Working with the wider team and being proactive allows us to pass on issues to the digital team for further support.
What is the biggest challenge in your role?
One of the biggest challenges is the tight school budget. Schools know they need to prioritise their ICT needs and invest in their equipment to keep the school running smoothly. However, ICT is sometimes underappreciated, making it difficult to secure necessary funding. I’m also often working on tasks that schools don’t see, such as background maintenance of Office and Windows systems. Without these, the school’s operating system would fall apart but these tasks are just part of my usual day and not as visible to staff in the school.
Why should schools have a Digital Technician?
Without a school tech, there would be a gradual decline in the system as there is just no one around to maintain and support it constantly. Eventually, the system would break down, phones would stop working, and CCTV would fail. Myself and my team help schools to make sure their systems are operational, compliant and efficient to protect the school to the best of their ability.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy every aspect of my job, which I’ve been doing for 23 years. Configuration and new updates keep the work interesting and challenging.
What is your biggest tip for schools?
Invest in the system. Consider the total cost of ownership and the time lost on ICT issues. More investment means more time to be proactive with systems and updates.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself!
In September, a newly qualified teacher started at a school who had been born after I started this job 23 years ago! And a fun fact: I’ve broken the national speed limit on a bicycle, reaching 62mph down Barden Road!
About Our School Technician Service
The School Technician’s scheme provides North Yorkshire schools with technical support that can assist with computers, printers, installing software and maintaining ICT equipment throughout the school. Our School Technician Service is designed to be entirely pro-active, providing subscribing schools with regular visits of agreed duration and frequency by a named technician, to carry out all those regular maintenance tasks that help prevent costly failure, minimising downtime and maximising your investment in ICT systems.
We understand that a school’s ICT support requirements can be quite complex and no one individual can fulfil every need. So when you subscribe to our School Technician Service, you are not simply engaging one individual, you have the expertise and knowledge of the entire Schools ICT Team supporting them. Our school technicians are able to carry out a range of tasks, many that lie outside the scope of our standard support services and that would normally incur additional charges. Tasks such as installing new hardware or software, server user management, general network “housekeeping”, ensuring all data is being securely backed up, updating tablet devices. These tasks would normally be charged at £80 for the first hour and £48 for each subsequent hour.
