Year 6 pupils shine a light on Autism Awareness Day in  heartfelt assembly

Autism Awareness Day, which took place early last month on 2 April, is critical for schools to recognise as it promotes understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity among students and staff.

By raising awareness about autism – whether that be through a dedicated assembly, a bake sale to raise important funds, or something else entirely –  schools foster a culture of inclusivity, where every individual is valued and respected for their unique strengths and challenges. And that can never be a bad thing!

It’s safe to say that Levendale Primary School in Yarm absolutely embraced this opportunity, with special recognition to  Zarina and Reece, who wrote and delivered an assembly to celebrate Autism Awareness Day in school.

A proactive and courageous decision

The year 6 pupils asked if they could share with everyone the positives about being unique and celebrate what makes us different from each other.

Surely everyone can agree that this was a lovely, meaningful suggestion that will have no doubt contributed to the development of empathy and compassion between pupils. Zarina and Reece are wise beyond their years!

After the assembly, they held a cake stall to raise funds for SEND resources and donated £100 to a local Autism Charity.

Understandably so, staff at Levendale Primary School are so proud of the positive message they delivered, and highlighted the mature way they conducted themselves.

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “Congratulations to Zarina and Reece for leading the charge in raising awareness for autism!

“Your dedication to inclusivity and understanding sets a powerful example for the entire North East school community. Together, you’ve sparked a conversation that will foster empathy, acceptance, and unity. Well done!”
