Triumphant North Shields school celebrates winning prestigious National Teaching Award!

Let’s give three huge NORTH EAST cheers for Norham High School, because it’s absolutely deserved!

This brilliant school has made it through to the final round of a prestigious teaching award, having been recently recognised with a Silver Award in the ‘Making a Difference – Secondary School of the Year’ category..

Competition across the Pearson National Teaching Awards was tough, but this North Shields school truly shone and, as a result, was selected from thousands of nominees. What an achievement!

One of the top 12 schools in the North East for pupil progress

This win highlights the remarkable impact the school has on shaping the lives of the young people in their care, which we never tire of hearing about at Schools North East.

Staff have spent the last four years transforming the school from Special Measures to Good, and have secured a position as one of the top 12 schools in the North East for pupil progress.

From thousands of providers, Norham High School is one of 102 deserving teachers, lecturers, leaders, support staff and institutions named as silver winners in this year’s awards. They will now be in the running for the coveted Gold Award, which will be announced at an exciting ceremony later in the year.

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “Huge congratulations to all staff and students at Norham High School!

“It’s always special to hear when one of our region’s schools achieve national recognition for their passion, determination, and overall hard work, so we’re bursting with pride at this result. Best of luck for the Gold award.”

A fantastic way to celebrate ‘National Thank A Teacher Day’

The announcement came as people across the UK celebrated ‘National Thank a Teacher Day’ on Wednesday 19 June, which applauded the whole education community and shone a light on the exceptional impact they have on shaping young lives.

‘National Thank a Teacher Day’ and the Pearson National Teaching Awards are run by the Teaching Awards Trust, an independent charity established over 25 years ago to celebrate the pivotal roles teachers, support staff, colleges, schools and early years educators play in inspiring young people, every single day.

Michael Morpurgo, author, former Children’s Laureate, and President of the Teaching Awards Trust, said: “The work and devotion of all of those who play a role in educating young people is phenomenal.

“Not only do they play a vital role in shaping minds inside the classroom, often they continue to encourage, support, motivate and inspire beyond. That’s why it is important for us to take a moment on this National Thank a Teacher Day to recognise their efforts.

“I am also thrilled to be able to congratulate this year’s Silver Award winners and recognise the amazing contributions and commitment they have shown is shaping the lives of the next generation – thank you!”

Joshua Cronin, Education Partnerships Director at Step into Teaching and Sponsor of The Award for Making a Difference – Secondary School of the Year, said: “We’re inspired by the efforts of schools in empowering students and positively impacting their school community.

“We’re delighted to be associated with the tremendous work that’s being delivered in communities across the UK.  Heartfelt congratulations to all the staff for their Silver Award win for The Award for Making a Difference – Secondary School.”
