Students at Framwellgate School celebrate

Students at Framwellgate School Durham are celebrating after they received their A Level and BTEC results today.

Framwellgate praised their curriculum and guidance programmes as a route to helping all their students fulfill their ambitions, whether it be higher education or moving into apprenticeships.

A wide variety of ambitions

The school was keen to not highlight individuals due to its large number of successes and positive stories and instead chose to share some of the future courses and institutes of its students.

They noted ‘the breadth of courses offered at the school and the high grades’ achieved allowed their students to get places at high performing institutes this Autumn including:

  • Data Science at the London School of Economics
  • Environmental Science at York University
  • Psychology at St Andrews University
  • Theoretical Physics at UCL
  • Criminology at Durham University
  • Veterinary Medicine at Edinburgh University
  • Sport and Exercise Science at Surrey University
  • Maths at Bath University
  • English Language at Sussex University
  • Politics and History at Newcastle University
  • German and Politics at Glasgow University

Andy Byers, Headteacher at Framwellgate, commented:

“This is the first set of national examination results for three years, so I am incredibly proud of this group of students who were awarded teacher assessed grades for their GCSEs in 2020 and hadn’t taken a set of public examinations until this summer. My thoughts are with all our students and those across the country. Many have overcome challenging individual circumstances due to the pandemic and all the students have had periods of isolation or times when school has reverted to remote learning. To maintain their focus and commitment and achieve the grades they have, deserves a huge amount of praise.”

Understanding that university is not for everyone

The school is proud of its advice and guidance and the variety of routes that students choose

after their A Level and BTEC results. Framwellgate have enabled their students to follow a number of different paths.

Andy explained that ‘university is not for everyone’, giving the examples of a student starting a sponsored degree as part of the Price Waterhouse Coppers Flying Start programme, one starting an apprenticeship in Youth Work and another becoming an Early Years Teaching Assistant.

Mr Byers ended by paying tribute to parents and staff. “The students own these results; they’ve worked incredibly hard, but I’m sure they will be the first to say that they’ve had wonderful support from their parents or carers and from their teachers and the sixth form team at school. With these fantastic results, they can be excited about their future.”
