St Patrick’s Catholic College incredible GCSE results affirm Ofsted’s recent ‘Good’ judgement

St Patrick’s Catholic College in Thornaby’s ‘incredible’ GCSE results affirm Ofsted’s recent ‘Good’ judgement with more and more pupils achieving top grades.

Success stories

Pupils have achieved an 86% pass rate in 4+ English and 71% pass rate in 4+ Maths which affords them an array of choices and opportunities post-16.

Freddie Close is really proud of the results he has achieved, especially as he has overcome some real personal challenges in recent years. He lost a parent and faced a recurring medical condition that led to absence and had to catch up on learning.

Despite these challenges, Freddie remained focused and showed resilience in abundance, both academically and in his personal life. This attitude has enabled him to achieve above his targets in all subjects including a grade 6 in History and a Distinction in Engineering.

Freddie said:

“I feel overwhelmed with the grades I have achieved and they will open more potential career paths to me including in the field of Law. Thanks to all the staff who have supported and guided me through the journey.”

Higher than imagined

Phillipa Newton is overjoyed with her excellent set of GCSE grades. She has been a great asset to St Patrick’s Catholic College family, achieving grade 8s in Maths, French, Religious Education and English Literature.

She is going to continue her further education at Trinity Catholic College Sixth Form in Middlesbrough where she will study A-levels in Maths, Physics and Business. After college and university she would like to have a career in accountancy. Phillipa commented:

“I have achieved higher than I ever imagined and am overjoyed”

Grade 9 in Maths for aspiring teacher

Alice Hodgers is feeling very proud of herself and the grades she has achieved. She has been awarded a grade 9 in Maths and a Distinction* in Music, with grade 7s in all of her other subject areas.

Alice will be progressing onto A-levels in Maths, Chemistry and Physics at Trinity Catholic College Sixth Form, Middlesbrough. Alice also acknowledged the ongoing support of her teachers over the last few years, particularly during the pandemic.

Alice said:

“These grades will set me up for what I want to study at college and beyond, I hope to become a Maths teacher”.

Support during lockdown

Former St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, Thornaby pupil Eve Anderson has remained a conscientious and reflective pupil throughout her time at St Patrick’s Catholic College. These qualities, as well as outstanding motivation, have enabled her to achieve above and beyond her targets.

The St Patrick’s family is very proud of the grades that Eve has achieved which include grade 9s in English, French, Religious Education and History. With these results Eve will be progressing to do Maths, Chemistry, Biology and History at A-level.

Eve hopes to embark on a career in dermatology once completing her A-levels and attending university. Eve paid tribute to her teachers for all the support they have given her in school, in extra classes after school and during lockdowns and commented:

“I’m really happy that it’s all worked out after the disruption of learning due to COVID”.

Top grades for Noah

Noah Gibson has achieved an impressive set of GCSE results and has been an asset to St Patrick’s Catholic College family over the last five years. He is a positive and hard-working pupil who demonstrated high levels of resilience in his studies.

Noah has been awarded top grade 9s in Physics and Geography. He has also achieved the EBacc – a set of GCSE subjects that include English, Maths, Science, Geography or History, and a Modern Foreign Language.

Pupils securing these subjects have a wide range of options available to them for further study and future careers. Noah is excited to begin his further education in Physics, Maths and Geography with his sights set on building a career in the sciences. Noah thanked all of his teachers for their time and efforts, particularly the additional support provided outside of school hours, to help him achieve his potential.

Excellent example

Amy Addison, a former pupil at Christ the King Primary School in Thornaby, is elated with her outstanding GCSE results. She has achieved grade 9s in English, Science, French and Religious Education. Her hard work and determination have set an excellent example for younger pupils. Amy said:

“I am absolutely over the moon, thanks to all the teachers who have helped me. I can’t believe it!”

Amy is now going to complete her A-levels at college in the hope of having a career in Pharmaceuticals.

Outstanding outcomes

St Patrick’s Catholic College Head Teacher, Deborah Law commented:

“Our 2022 cohort have achieved incredible results and we are extremely proud of all their individual progress and achievements. Although the pandemic caused significant disruption for this group of Year 11, they have overcome it with sheer hard work and resilience. This is reflected in their final results. A significant proportion of our pupils have been awarded the highest grades 8 and 9 across the board and we want to congratulate them on such outstanding outcomes. With such fantastic results, our pupils have bright and successful futures ahead of them. We could not have asked for more commitment and focus from this year group. The class of 2022 are an amazing group of young people who will forever be part of the St Patrick’s family. We know they will go out there and change the world!”

If any Year 11 pupils are interested in continuing their post-16 education within the Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust family, there are limited places available for September at Trinity Sixth Form. Students can email 6thform@trinity.npcat.org.uk and someone will contact them to discuss their options.
