St Godric’s Catholic Primary School shines in glowing Ofsted report

St Godric’s Catholic Primary School in Thornley has been praised by Ofsted for its exceptional standards, with inspectors celebrating its nurturing environment, ambitious curriculum, and students who “shine like stars lighting up the sky.”

A school that inspires excellence

As part of the Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, which includes 30 schools across East Durham, South Tyneside, and Sunderland, St Godric’s has been commended for giving children a “fantastic start to their education.”

Ofsted lead inspector Dughall McCormick, who visited the school at the end of the autumn term, was deeply impressed by the school’s dedication to its pupils.

“Pupils love attending this nurturing and welcoming school,” he wrote in his report. “They thrive in an environment where staff care deeply for them. Adults foster strong, lasting, and positive relationships with pupils, making them feel happy and safe. Pupils have confidence in the adults around them and know they will be supported if they have any worries.”

High standards and exceptional learning

The school’s high expectations for achievement are met with enthusiasm by its students. The curriculum is broad, ambitious, and meticulously planned, ensuring that every child receives a well-rounded education. Mixed-age classes and the needs of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are carefully considered, making learning accessible for all.

Ofsted’s report highlights that Reception pupils get off to a “fantastic start,” with books and storytelling playing a key role in their development. Additionally, the school instills essential values of respect and tolerance, preparing pupils well for life beyond primary school.

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “This report truly captures the magic happening at St Godric’s. Congratulations to everyone on this well-deserved recognition of your exceptional work.”

Exemplary behaviour and school pride

The behaviour of pupils at St Godric’s is described as “exemplary,” with children showing a strong sense of pride in both themselves and their surroundings.

“The school’s mission statement to shine ‘like stars lighting up the sky’ is truly reflected in the pupils’ attitudes. They take pride in everything they do and are eager to learn,” the report states.

Executive Head Teacher Julie Hill expressed her pride in the school community: “We are always so proud of our wonderful school community, and we are delighted that the inspection captured us so well.”
