St Bede’s Catholic Primary School celebrated for outstanding care and community spirit

Children at St Bede’s Catholic Primary School in Jarrow are being recognised for feeling “safe, deeply loved, valued and celebrated for their uniqueness,” following a glowing report by the Catholic Schools Inspectorate (CSI).

The school, part of the Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, was inspected on behalf of the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle and rated ‘Good’ overall.

Pupils Proud and Supported

CSI lead inspector Barbara Reilly-O’Donnell highlighted the school’s strong sense of community: “Pupils know that their uniqueness is celebrated and they recognise that they are valued. They are confident and extremely proud members of the community.

“Leaders prioritise the wellbeing of pupils and their families, as well as staff. Consequently, pupils know they are safe and deeply loved, and staff feel very well cared for and supported.”

The report noted that pupils clearly understand the school’s mission statement, “Inspired by Jesus to care, to serve, to do our best,” and can explain how it guides their behaviour and interactions with others. One pupil commented, “It feels special to be part of this school.”

Celebrating staff dedication

Staff were praised for their “generous” approach in welcoming and supporting both pupils and their families, with parents highlighting the “compassion and concern” shown during challenging times. Leaders were also recognised for developing ‘The St Bede’s Way’, which embodies the school’s mission and values.

Strong learning and spiritual growth

The report highlighted that pupils make “consistent progress” in religious education and other lessons, demonstrating curiosity, engagement, and a positive attitude to learning. Prayer and reflection are central to daily life at St Bede’s, with staff creating engaging, reflective spaces for pupils to explore spirituality and faith.

Chris Zarraga, CEO of Schools North East, commented: “St Bede’s Catholic Primary School is a shining example of the strength and spirit of our region’s schools. This report highlights the extraordinary dedication of staff, the pride of pupils, and the warmth of the community.

“Celebrating successes like this reminds us of the incredible work happening every day in North East schools and the positive impact it has on young people’s lives.”

Schools North East is proud to celebrate this achievement and the ongoing commitment of local schools to nurturing safe, supportive, and inspiring environments for all pupils.
