Skipping to success: World Record holder inspires pupils at Barnard Castle Prep

Pupils at Barnard Castle Preparatory School were literally jumping for joy when they were joined by world-record-holding skipper Pete Thompson, also known as the Skipping Ninja.

In a series of high-energy workshops, Pete had the children skipping, laughing, and learning how movement can boost both physical and mental wellbeing. A five-time world record holder, Pete has turned his passion for skipping into a career that inspires young people across the country.

“Skipping is very physical but also makes you think better,” Pete told the children. “Fifteen years ago, I wasn’t exercising or eating well and I didn’t feel great. Then I picked up a skipping rope — and it changed my life, giving me Ninja focus. I skip every day now; it makes me feel powerful and happy. Skipping really does link with your school’s Barney Way superhero values — it helps you to be more successful.”

Headmistress Laura Turner said the visit perfectly reflected the school’s commitment to holistic education: “We firmly believe in the power of exercise to enhance learning opportunities. Physical and mental wellbeing go hand-in-hand. Our children love being active, and this boundless energy translates beautifully into the classroom, helping them thrive academically.”

Adding his support, Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “It’s wonderful to see schools like Barnard Castle Prep embedding wellbeing and physical activity into their daily culture. Initiatives like this show how creative, engaging experiences can make a real difference to children’s confidence, focus, and happiness.”

With ropes whirling and smiles all around, it’s safe to say that Barnard Castle Prep pupils have skipped their way a little closer to healthier, happier lives — Ninja style.
