RGS Newcastle expands Sixth Form curriculum in a landmark year for the school

The Royal Grammar School (RGS), Newcastle – named UK Independent Senior School of the Year at the prestigious TES Awards earlier this year – is delighted to announce a significant and forward-looking expansion to its Sixth Form curriculum from September 2026.

Responding to strong interest from students and families, RGS will introduce two new A-Level subjects: Business Studies and Photography. These additions reflect the school’s commitment to offering an ambitious, modern curriculum that supports student aspirations and opens doors to a wide range of future pathways.

With these new subjects, RGS will offer 30 Sixth Form qualifications – the broadest range of A-Level options available among North East independent schools.

Head Teacher Mr Stanford shared: “At a time when many schools are narrowing their curriculum, RGS Newcastle is proud to be expanding its offering, ensuring every student has access to enabling qualifications that support progression to the most competitive university courses.”

New subjects to inspire ambition

A-Level Business Studies will provide students with a strong foundation in strategy, marketing, finance and leadership. Taught by a subject specialist within the successful Economics Department, the course will support students interested in careers such as management, entrepreneurship and consultancy.

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “It’s fantastic to see a North East school continuing to invest in such a broad and ambitious curriculum. RGS Newcastle’s commitment to expanding opportunities for young people is not only a celebration of their 500-year history, but a real contribution to the region’s future. This kind of forward-thinking leadership shows what’s possible when schools put aspiration at the heart of their offer.”

The department also draws on RGS’s extensive network of over 10,000 alumni, who regularly contribute talks and share insights that support students’ early career development.

A-Level Photography will offer students a creative and technically rich pathway, helping them develop visual storytelling skills and build high-quality portfolios. The course will be delivered in the school’s state-of-the-art art studios by a team renowned for securing some of the strongest art outcomes nationally.

The announcement comes during a celebratory year for RGS Newcastle, which is marking 500 years of history alongside its national recognition as UK Independent Senior School of the Year. The school is proud that the North East is home to the winner of such a distinguished award, reflecting the region’s growing reputation for educational excellence.
