Pride for Hebburn as St Joseph’s student earns first England cap

We are thrilled to celebrate the success of local Year 11 student, Roman Dowell (15), who recently earned his first England cap for the Men’s U17 Football Team. Impressive is an understatement!
Roman, a pupil at St Joseph’s Catholic Academy (part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust) received the exciting call-up to join the Young Lions alongside players from clubs across both the English and French leagues.
Maximise sporting potential and building character
The match took place on 9 September in Duisburg, Germany. Despite Germany taking an early lead, Roman stood strong in goal and helped England secure a thrilling 7–5 victory.
Reflecting on the experience, Roman said: “It was a dream to play for England, and this meant a lot to me and my family. It was even better to beat Germany on their own ground.”
Roman’s Head of House, Mr. Mark Leask, praised his achievement: “As a school we are extremely proud of Roman. He is a determined, hardworking student and a fantastic role model for others. We look forward to seeing how his football career develops.”
Roman is part of St Joseph’s elite football training programme, run in partnership with Fast Feet, which provides specialist coaching designed to support long-term player development alongside academic studies. The programme not only helps students maximise their sporting potential but also builds character, discipline, and resilience – all essential qualities for a future career in sport.
What’s next for Roman?
Roman is currently a Newcastle United scholar, regularly playing for the U17s and part of the U19 UEFA Youth League squad. His ultimate ambition is to play in the Premier League, represent the senior England team, and one day bring home the World Cup trophy.
Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, commended Roman’s achievement: “Roman’s success is a testament to the dedication and talent nurtured within our region. His accomplishment not only brings pride to St Joseph’s Catholic Academy but also serves as an inspiration to students across the North East, highlighting the potential for excellence in both academics and athletics.”
Everyone at Schools North East and St Joseph’s are incredibly proud of Roman’s achievement and will be following his journey closely as he continues to pursue his footballing dreams.
