Ofsted Report 2017: Primary School Review

Ofsted’s 2016/17 Annual Report made a number of comments relating Primary Schools:

  • Only 25% of primary schools are academies, compared to 70% of secondaries, showing the fragmentation between the sectors.
  • Ninety per cent of all primary schools in England are currently rated good or outstanding, the same as in 2016. However, some continue to struggle. There are over 500 primaries that have been judged as RI or satisfactory at their last two inspections. Of those inspected this year, around 80 primaries had not been good or outstanding at any point since 2005.
  • 8% of outstanding primary and secondary schools were last inspected as long ago as 2006 to 2007. However, more than half of outstanding primary and secondary schools have been inspected within the last 6 academic years.
  • Ofsted use the report to warn schools should not view test results as an end in themselves, particularly for younger pupils. It mentions that a number of primary schools they visited were effectively suspending the curriculum during the course of Year 6, sometimes as early as Christmas, to make way for SATs revision.
