Northern primary schools are least likely to be coasting
Only 22 primary schools in the North (2.1% out of a total of 1,054) were found to be coasting after the release of provisional 2016 school performance results, according to the Department for Education.

This is below the national average of 3.5% and the lowest percentage across the whole of England, followed by 2.7% in Lancashire & West Yorkshire, where 65 primary schools out of a total of 2,411 were listed.
This is not the case for secondary education however, where 25 out of 230 schools (10.9%) in the North were deemed to be coasting, slightly above the national average of 10.7%. The regions with the fewest coasting secondaries are North East London & East of England, followed by North West London & South Central.
In total, 804 schools across the whole of England are coasting under provisional Progress 8 measures.
The data published also shows that, at primary level, Local Authority maintained schools are less likely to be coasting, with Voluntary Aided schools well below the national average.
However, at secondary level academy-type schools are less likely to be coasting, with none of the 26 University Technical Colleges (UTCs) found to be coasting.
As this is based on provisional Progress 8 results, no school will be formally classed as coasting until revised results will be published in the coming months. Coasting schools will be then reviewed by their Regional School Commissioner for either additional support to its current leadership team, or academy conversion or new trust handover.
