NHSG recognised nationally for outstanding Early Years Provision

Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) has been shortlisted for Early Years Setting of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards 2026, one of the UK’s most prestigious education awards. What a brilliant way to begin the summer term!

The Tes Schools Awards celebrate excellence across both the state and independent sectors and attracted a record number of nominations this year. NHSG’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision has been recognised for its nurturing ethos, excellent teaching and strong partnerships with families alongside a clear commitment to instilling confidence, curiosity and a belief in limitless potential in girls from the very earliest age.

Educational journey shaped by ambition, warmth and trailblazers

The shortlisting comes in NHSG’s 150th anniversary year, highlighting its Early Years Foundation Stage as the foundation of the school’s distinctive three to eighteen all‑through and all-girl education. From their first experiences of school, pupils are immersed in NHSG’s values and its long‑standing legacy of empowering girls to be ambitious, confident and courageous.

Commenting on the award, Head at NHSG Amanda Hardie said: “We are absolutely delighted that our Early Years setting has been recognised in this way. As we celebrate our 150th anniversary, the girls currently in Nursery and Reception are beginning their educational journey shaped by ambition, warmth and the generations of trailblazers who have gone before them.

“At NHSG, we recognise that the first five years of a girl’s development play a critical role in shaping future learning, attitudes, and aspirations. Our curriculum is designed not only to ignite imagination but also to develop resilience, independence, and a love of challenge – qualities we believe are essential for the female leaders of tomorrow.

“In our Early Years setting we nurture a culture where girls understand that they have a powerful place in society and the belief that they can pursue any path their future holds. This culture, combined with outstanding staff, pedagogy and facilities creates an environment intentionally designed for girls from age three onwards to thrive.

Setting a benchmark for the wider sector

The Tes Awards shine a spotlight on the outstanding work taking place across schools, celebrating the individuals and teams making a meaningful impact on pupils, staff and their wider communities. The shortlist was selected by a panel of expert judges, including experienced school leaders and education specialists.

Rod Williams, CEO of Tes, commented: “This year’s shortlist showcases the exceptional standard of entries across the Tes Schools Awards, reflecting the breadth of impact being delivered in UK education. Each category highlights schools and individuals who are not only driving meaningful change within their own settings, but also setting a benchmark for the wider sector.

“The Tes Schools Awards are designed to recognise and elevate this work, celebrating those making a measurable difference to pupils, staff and communities across the UK – and with a record number of nominations received this year, it clearly reinforces the strength and impact being delivered across the UK education sector.”

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in London on 19 June 2026, hosted by award‑winning comedian, writer and presenter Katherine Ryan, at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane. Good luck, NHSG!
