Lord Glenamara Award Winners Announced
At the Schools North East Summit, the DfE hosted the celebration of the Lord Glenamara awards for outstanding educators and students in the North East.
Lord Glenamara
This is the final year of the awards which were first introduced by the Department for Education in 2012 and were extended in scope by Damian Hinds as part of Opportunity North East (ONE) programme in July 2019.
This year is also the final year of the programme which focused on improving educational and employment outcomes and boosting the aspirations of young people across the region.
As well as the traditional academic excellence award the extended prizes recognises a North East pupil achieving vocational excellence as well as dedicating themselves to the service of others in their school and the wider community.
Prizes also recognise inspiring teachers and other professionals who are helping to ensure that young people in the North East achieve their potential.
The DfE manages the awards and, has awarded a North East pupil each year who has excelled in academic study and made a significant civic contribution.
The Lord Glenamara Prize is open to school pupils in years 11, 12 and 13 across the North East of England who have shown:

Pastoral Award Winner Hollie Rankin
This year Schools North East once again sponsored the Pastoral Award which was given to Hollie Rankin from Morpeth Road Academy.
Paul Martindale, North of Tyne Regional Hub Leader at WISE Academies commented:
“I’m delighted for Hollie to be recognised in this way; she is amazing! She shows great determination to support children and their families however she can. Hollie has a huge range of talents which she is far too humble to shout about; she is the author of her own books helping children deal with trauma and loss, to supporting some of our most vulnerable families with multi-agency support in the most professional and committed way possible. She is relentlessly positive and optimistic, bringing out the best in whichever people she meets. Hollie will also be the first to recognise that her brilliant work is only possible thanks to the dedication and commitment of her colleagues across Blyth, and the invaluable support they all provide, without whom Hollie wouldn’t be able to do the job she does. She is an extremely worthy recipient of this award, and a great advocate for the young people she represents.”
Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East noted:
“Hollie’s efforts have clearly made a huge difference to the pupils at her school. She has worked tirelessly to help support staff, students and parents mental health and wellbeing which is an incredibly key area in schools. This work goes beyond school with her published work focussing on providing significant additional support for those suffering from trauma, bereavement and loss and her passion for her work deserves this recognition”
