Lemington Riverside Primary School welcomes Minister for Early Years

Lemington Riverside Primary School was visited by a special guest recently! As part of his region-wide tour, Stephen Morgan, Minister for Early Years Education, visited the Newcastle school to learn more about how it’s embracing artificial intelligence (AI).

Developing confidence in using AI

During his visit, Minister Morgan learned about the ways in which the school is being innovative with the use of AI to reduce staff workload and enhance the curriculum*. Two critical factors in today’s education landscape.

He met with the school’s Head Teacher, Craig Heeley, as well as George Sayers, Head of Research, and Ian Dawson, Head of School Effectiveness at Newcastle City Council.

The school also shared with Minister Morgan the collaborative work that is taking place between schools in the West End Schools’ Trust (WEST) to develop staff confidence in using AI.

Embracing challenges and thriving in spite of them

While at the school, Minister Morgan also explored the approach to inclusion that Lemington Riverside has implemented following a continued increase in the number of pupils on roll with additional SEND needs.

The school currently has 55 percent of pupils with an identified SEND need and 8 percent of the school population with an EHCP, but has embraced the challenge by creating a unique provision that allows all children in the community to access the school’s provision.

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “We are glad to hear that Minister Morgan had a great visit to Lemington Riverside as part of his tour across the North East. We’re sure this was one successful visit out of many, and has helped leave a lasting positive impression on him of our region’s schools and their expertise.”
