Kingsmeadow’s literary stars shine bright at Lit & Phil Awards!

Hold onto your hats, bookworms! Kingsmeadow Community School is bursting with pride as two of its talented students have scooped prestigious runner-up prizes at Newcastle’s renowned Lit & Phil Young Writers Awards!

This wasn’t just any writing competition. With the theme “My Favourite Place,” it challenged young writers to tap into their deepest memories and wildest imaginations. And to say Kingsmeadow students delivered would be an understatement.

A place of wonder and a library of dreams

Year 10’s Mia took us on a thrilling non-fiction journey to “Alton Towers: a place of wonder,” capturing the magic and excitement of her favourite destination. Meanwhile, Year 8’s Wanya transported us to a fantastical realm with his captivating fictional piece, “The Library of Wonders.”

These aren’t just stories; they’re portals to other worlds, crafted with skill and passion. And the judges at the Lit & Phil, a literary institution steeped in history, were thoroughly impressed. And rightly so!

A teacher’s pride and a Head Teacher’s delight

Miss Graham, the driving force behind Kingsmeadow’s Creative Writing Club, couldn’t contain her excitement. “I am unbelievably happy for everyone who took part in this competition,” she said.

“The judges were massively impressed with the quality of work from our school. Our Creative Writing Club members inspire me every single day with their incredible sense of creativity and imagination. They have such a beautiful way with words that are capable of making me both laugh and cry and I am so, so proud of their commitment and talent.”

Head Teacher Mr. Barrett echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of the Lit & Phil. “The Lit & Phil is such an iconic institution, something of which the whole region should be proud,” he said.

“To have two Kingsmeadow Community School students winning runners-up prizes in the Young Writer Awards this year makes me proud as their head teacher. Mia and Wanya have both demonstrated excellent effort and sheer joy in their creative writing.”

A celebration of creativity:

This achievement isn’t just about winning awards; it’s a testament to the power of creative writing and the nurturing environment at Kingsmeadow Community School. It’s about students finding their voices, expressing their unique perspectives, and sharing their stories with the world.

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “Let’s give a huge congratulations to Mia and Wanya! Your talent and dedication have made Kingsmeadow and the wider North East community very proud.

“This is a reminder that within our region’s school walls, we have budding authors, storytellers, and dreamers ready to make their mark on the literary landscape. We can’t wait to see what they write next.”
