HSAT is a multi-phase, specialist academy trust with students from ages five to nineteen. There are six schools in the trust, providing for a range of special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The trust was established in 2013 and has schools located in Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and Redcar and Cleveland local authorities.

HSAT had an Ofsted MAT evaluation from Monday 12 to Thursday 15 September 2022. The report praised the trusts careers curriculum noting:

“Opportunities, guidance and preparation for adulthood are important priorities across the trust. Pupils of all ages benefit from a strong careers curriculum, helping to prepare them for the world of work and adulthood.”

The CEO, Elizabeth Horne CBE, stated she was:

“delighted that the summary evaluation letter recognises all the hard work of staff across the Trust. It also highlights the very positive support provided for all our children and young people.  There is real evidence that what staff do has a very positive impact on the outcomes our pupils and students achieve.  Our pupils and students are also recognised for being positive learners.”

The Chair of the Board of Trustees, David Walker, was delighted that the strength of the Trust had been recognised by Ofsted who stated “stage one inspection outcomes, pupils’ achievements and the proportion of pupils moving into education, employment and training confirm HSAT to be a strong and improving Trust”, confirming that the Trust was well placed to continue its growth and future developments.

Pauline Aitchison, Chair of the National Network of Special Schools for School Business Professionals and Deputy Director of Schools North East said:

“Well done to Horizons Specialist Academy Trust for their excellent Ofsted inspection. It’s wonderful to see praise for our region’s Special school provision. Congratulations to all those involved!”
