Hometown heroes return: Schoolchildren invited to see Brodsky Quartet in Teesside!

Get ready, Teesside! A wave of musical brilliance is about to wash over the area as the legendary Brodsky Quartet returns to their roots at St Mary’s Cathedral in Middlesbrough. Forget stuffy concert halls – this is a homecoming, and local pupils are especially invited.
Imagine this: a group of musicians who have shared stages with Paul McCartney, Sting, and even Björk, stepping back into the very town where it all began.
Formed right here in the North East in Middlesbrough in 1972 (originally as the Cleveland Quartet), the Brodsky Quartet, named after the iconic violinist Adolph Brodsky, has conquered the world. And now, they’re bringing that magic home.
This isn’t just your average concert. Ian Belton, Jacqueline Thomas, Paul Cassidy, and Krysia Osostowicz, the current incredible lineup, will be gracing St Mary’s with their presence, not once, but twice.
A special treat for Teesside’s young musicians
The dazzling quartet are delivering an exclusive afternoon performance crafted just for pupils (Years 4-9), offering them the thrill of experiencing world-class classical music up close.
They’ll be playing familiar tunes arranged for string quartet, breaking down the instruments, and demystifying the magic of ensemble playing. This is more than just a concert; it’s an inspiration injection.
Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “Exposing our students to the power of live music performed by such accomplished artists can have a profound and lasting impact. We wholeheartedly encourage all schools in the Teesside area, and across the North East, to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.”
Canon Paul Farrer, Dean of St Mary’s Cathedral, couldn’t be more excited: “Our lineup showcases a rich tapestry of talent, from world-renowned ensembles to local favourites.
“The Brodsky Quartet’s return to Middlesbrough is a homecoming we’re particularly excited about. Their legacy and connection to our town make this concert a unique highlight of our season.
“We’re especially pleased to offer schoolchildren this very opportunity to hear such high-quality music at close quarters. It also provides the ideal opportunity to fulfil the requirements of the National Plan and the National Curriculum.
“We hope seeing how musicians who grew up on Teesside reaching the very top of their profession will inspire today’s young people and show them what they can achieve with hard work and talent.”
Evening performance: A classical feast
For GCSE, A-level, BTEC students, and all string enthusiasts, the evening performance promises a deep dive into the masterpieces of Bach, Ravel, and Shostakovich. Witness the artistry of these international stars as they bring these timeless compositions to life.
